(EN)Resilient development and circular economy model for the sugar agro-industry in Cuba

proyecto azcuba
National

The project aims to provide a sustainable development model for the sugar agro-industry that considers the characteristics and potential of the crop and its industrial processing to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. This model incorporates conservation practices and new production technologies capable of restoring extracted nutrients, maximizing production diversification by transforming the current concept of a sugar mill into a sugarcane processing plant for various products. Priority will be given to low-emission electricity generation, human and animal feed, and bioproducts. The project also seeks to recirculate and add value to process waste, eliminate environmental pollution of the soil, water, and air, and enhance the resilience of the agro-industrial process and surrounding communities. Furthermore, it offers a proposal for the technical and technological reconversion of Cuba's sugar agro-industry based on a circular economy model with a significant impact on the community and on production linkages with other nationally important economic activities, as well as the promotion of domestic and international trade.
